June 2006 blogposts

Library Quote Of The Day

From the days of Sumerian clay tablets till now, humans have “published” at least 32 million books, 750 million articles and essays, 25 million songs, 500 million images, 500,000 movies, 3 million videos, TV shows and short films and 100 billion public Web pages. All this material is currently contained in all the libraries and archives of the world. When fully digitized, the whole lot could be compressed (at current technological rates) onto 50 petabyte hard disks. Today you need a building about the size of a small-town library to house 50 petabytes. With tomorrow’s technology, it will all fit onto your iPod. When that happens, the library of all libraries will ride in your purse or wallet—if it doesn’t plug directly into your brain with thin white cords. Some people alive today are surely hoping that they die before such things happen, and others, mostly the young, want to know what’s taking so long. (Could we get it up and running by next week? They have a history project due.)

I Told Myself

I told myself that instead of falling hard I would take things day by day, with no expectations, and see what developed over time.
I told myself that instead of dreaming about romantic possibilities I would be practical, reasoned, head over heart.
I told myself that I wouldn't get hurt because I wasn't going to put myself out there and leave myself dangling, vulnerable.
I told myself that this time it would be different.  I told myself that I would be okay with whatever happened.

Turns out I lied to myself.
Now I just tell myself what an idiot I am.

Headache

Woke up this morning with a bad headache that even a couple extra-strength acetaminophen hasn't quite gotten rid of, and a sinking feeling in my gut as I review the events of the previous evening.  First mistake was two double-shot cocktails at Cocktails in the Trees, the annual Pride Loft Party.  Second mistake was showing up at the Pride Dance Party a couple hours after said cocktails, nursing a fantasy that had disconnected from reality sometime earlier in the evening.  Earlier in the evening?  Fucking hell.  Make that earlier in the week fortnight month.
You can connect the dots to see the third mistake, kids.  My headache is still not going away, and I'm going back to bed.

News Flash: Paris Hilton Actually DOES Something!
Well, it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

My favourite nasty comments on this video are from here:
"...I wanted to reach through the monitor, pin her arms down to her sides, truss her up with her own bleached hair, and javelin-toss her out to sea, where sharks will jump up into the air to eagerly consume her."
(with respect to the shaky camerawork on the video) "...is this the Blair Witch Project Beach Party Boogaloo? Was the entire "beachy" idea to make the viewer seasick? BTW nice "singing" Paris. And by singing I mean twelve layered vocal tracks, a pitch corrector, vocoder, and ten months of studio editing."
